With the coronavirus pandemic forcing the cancellation of many of this year’s events, auction houses have reacted swiftly to the new environment by moving their physical auctions to online sales. RM Sotheby’s recently completed May sale set a new record for the highest price achieved at a dedicated online-only collector car auction; its two-owner Enzo with less than 1,250 miles from new selling for $2,640,000 (estimate $2,600,000 – 2,900,000).

The 193-car catalogue included a 23,555-km 288 GTO originally owned by Hartmut Ibing, selling for a mid-estimate $2,310,000, and a recently restored 250 GT Coupe with coachwork by Ellena also made its mid-estimate, fetching $671,000 – helping RM Sotheby’s post a respectable overall sale total of $16.4 million.

Berlinetta Boxers enjoyed success in May. Osenat’s sale in Fontainebleau featured a French-titled 1979 512 BB which changed hands for €144,000 (estimate €150,000 – 200,000); while back in the UK, Silverstone Auctions posted a remarkable 89% sell-through rate from its online auction, with their single-family owned 20,964-mile 1982 512 BBi bringing £189,200 (estimate £175,000 – 220,000).
